Don't Stop Dreaming

Hi everyone! Yesterday, I was lucky enough to get a Kindle Daily Deal for all three of my books in my Lizzy Gardner Series. And then all of my friends and my author support group and people I never met tweeted and shared and my books hit #2, #3, and #6!

I don't know what to say except THANK YOU to every person out there who gave my books a chance. If you've read my blog or an interview that I've done over the past 2 1/2 years, then you know that after writing for 20 years, I finally got lucky. A brilliant man over at Amazon found a way to make it possible for EVERY writer to publish their book(s) and hopefully find readers. THANK YOU, Mr. Bezos.

If you're thinking of self-publishing, click on the green button on the upper left corner of my website "Steps to Self-Publishing" and that should be enough to get you going. After you release your book to the world, start writing your next book. I'm a big proponent of trying everything at least once, but I got carried away and for the past nine months or so I did more traveling and promoting than writing. Don't make the same mistake I did. If you're a writer, always make writing your priority. The signings and conferences I attended were great, but as far as I'm concerned, they're not the reason my books hit #2, #3, and #6. Some writers can do both, I'm just not one of them.

So, that's my advice to you. WRITE. READ. WRITE SOME MORE.

DREAM BIG and NEVER GIVE UP!

I am blessed and grateful.

A DARK MIND - RELEASE DAY!

A DARK MIND, book 3 in the Lizzy Gardner series, is out TODAY!
Amazon sent me champagne to celebrate. I will try to wait until 5 pm. before I drink it.

"T.R. Ragan has penned a dark, twisting crime thriller that will keep you up well past your bedtime. Page-turning suspense at its best!" -- Allison Brennan, New York Times Bestselling Author of Stolen

To celebrate the launch of A Dark Mind, I am giving away a Kindle Paperwhite to one lucky winner chosen by Random.org.

All you have to do for a chance to win is comment and tell me what nickname the serial killer in A DARK MIND has been given. It's that easy!

WINNER WILL BE  CHOSEN USING RANDOM.ORG AND ANNOUNCED ON FRIDAY.

Over 300,000 books sold!

JUNE UPDATE: 8,985 books sold in June. OVER 300,000 books sold as of June 30, 2012

DON’T LET LARGE SALES NUMBERS DEPRESS YOU, LET THEM INSPIRE AND MOTIVATE!

I still plan to report TOTAL number of books sold every month, but nothing will be quite the same since Abducted and Dead Weight will be re-released by Thomas & Mercer on July 17, 2012. Because of this, I will no longer have access to my sales numbers on a daily basis. Sales for these books will soon be reported on a quarterly basis. Using my sales chart, I can guess at number of books sold on a monthly basis, but it will only be an estimate.

To all writers out there who aren’t seeing great sales yet, I want to say use big sales numbers you see reported to motivate and inspire. For instance, Bella Andre sold over 90,000 books in the month of June alone. I am super excited for her. This is great news for indie authors. I don’t know Bella but she seems like a happy, friendly person and she obviously works hard and knows how to tell a story.

There are indie authors out there who are selling more than 90,000 books a month. There will always be somebody with more sales than you. There will always be authors out there making more money, too.

For nearly 20 years, I didn’t make a dime, not one cent, but I kept writing because it’s what I love to do. I was and am lucky enough to have a husband who works hard to keep a roof over our heads, but an extra paycheck over the past 20 years would have been nice, too.

Writing books and having my stories read by hundreds of readers was my dream and still is. I am now lucky enough to have the time to write, although it wasn’t always that way. Like many of you I struggled with finding balance between working outside of the house, writing, and raising kids. I put in my 10,000 hours (multiplied by 2 or 3) and now it’s paying off.

If you want something bad enough, you’ll work for it and you won’t give up. Writing a novel with tension and conflict and interesting characters is not easy. It’s definitely not a career for the faint of heart. Passion and determination is what it takes to keep many writers in front of the computer day after day.

Don’t let other writers’ large numbers of sales and big paychecks make you feel like you’re doing something wrong. Let it motivate you and challenge you to write the best damn book you can!

I leave for New York very soon. I will be speaking on a panel with other writers at the BEA and I can't wait! I will also be meeting many people from Amazon...author teams and consultants and my editor! I will report back when I return.

As you can see, my sales are dipping, but I never worry about that. Besides, I would never complain about having over 15,000 sales in a month! More than anything, I can't wait to get back to writing my latest book. I love writing and connecting with readers and that's all I really want to do.

If you are thinking of self-publishing, go to my LINKS tab above and see what I did to get started. There are also links to the IRI group, 1000+ members who are not only welcoming but also willing to share tips with you!

Self-publishing and being an independent authors is lots of fun and a lot of work, but if you are patient and take one thing at a time, you'll enjoy every step of the ride. Just like writing a book, it can't all be done in one day.

If you are a new writer, remember that learning the craft and writing every day is the most important thing you can do. Your book must be the best it can be. Hire a proofreader at the very least. If you have a great book ready to go, release it to the world and good luck! Stay positive and don't worry about slow sales at first. Say YES to interviews and blogging. Try to get your books reviewed. Send one request to a reviewer every day and eventually someone will agree to review your book. Remember...what works for one author, might not work for another. It's all up to you. Believe in yourself and your books. You can do it!

If you are a READER, thanks for stopping by. Let me know what you would like to see posted!

Nineteen years ago, when I set out to write my first book, I felt such a compelling need to not only write, but to get my stories read. It wasn't about ego or money, but about entertaining people and proving to myself that I could do this. I wanted to show my kids that perseverance and hard work pays off. More than a few people reminded me that writing was one thing, but actually getting my books published was quite another. I knew the odds were against me, but that didn't stop me. I believed that if I worked hard enough and long enough, I would see my books on the shelves of a local book store. Writing every day, finaling in prestigious contests, and signing with two agents wasn't making the process work any faster for me. I stopped attending writing conferences after 2008 because I was beginning to feel like a wannabe. All of my writing friends and critique partners were published by that time. I was always happy for their success, because whenever a friend sold that told me publishers were still buying, which meant there was hope. But still, I was beginning to believe that I had been wrong. Hard work combined with perseverance wasn't the magic key afterall. My husband had never read a word of what I had written over the years, but he knew I was feeling down and he told me to write for the love of writing or stop writing altogether. And he was right. For the first time since writing my very first book, I didn't care what was selling hot and what was not. Writing Abducted was fun and therapeutic. I was writing the story for me. Not only was my heroine going to survive a horrific event, she was going to learn to move on with her life and make a difference in other people's lives, too.

And the rest, as they say, is history!

Below I have listed some of the AMAZING things that have happened in my first year as an indie author:
  • I received incredible emails from readers!
  • A Knight in Central Park was selected by Pixel of Ink as one of their Top 10 bestsellers in 2011.
  • A Knight in Central Park was mentioned in the Wall Street Journal, print and e-edition.
  • A Knight in Central Park hit the Top 100 All Kindle Best Sellers List twice.
  • Abducted hit the Top 100 All Kindle Best Sellers List twice, making it as high as #5.
  • Taming Mad Max and Dead Weight hit the All Kindle Top 100 List.
  • I was interviewed on USA Today's HEA blog.
  • I was approached by some wonderful agents, foreign sales people, and two movie producers.
  • I received mentions in Amazon's Press Release and KDP Newsletter.
  • I was mentioned in PC Magazine on February 29, 2012 among others.
  • Return of the Rose and A Knight in Central Park are still in the Top 20 in Time Travel after one year!
  • Abducted received a wonderful review from Kirkus Revews.
  • Abducted was given 4 1/2 Top Pick in the April 2012 Romantic Times magazine.
  • Abducted was selected as one of the BEST for 2011 in Suspense Magazine.

The BEST part of this new journey has been connecting with readers.

Thanks to all who have taken the time to read one of my book(s), write a review, comment on my blog, offer congrats, or email me to tell me I have a new fan!

2011 has far exceeded my wildest dreams. No matter what YOUR dreams are, don't let anyone tell you that you can't succeed.

YOU CAN DO IT!

For more info on self-publishing, go to my LINKS tab.

I enrolled ABDUCTED and DEAD WEIGHT in KDP Select in the beginning of February to see if I could get sales moving again. I put Abducted for FREE for 2 days (2/9 and 2/10) and had 50,000 free downloads. 48 hours later, ABDUCTED hit #5 in the All Kindle Paid list. Woohoo! There has been a definite crossover in sales for my other books, too. DEAD WEIGHT has made the Top 10 List in Romantic Suspense and the 100 All Kindle Paid list for the first time. As far as I can tell, ranking is everything. Better ranking = better sales. I know that's pretty obvious, but this is why giving away books can be used as an important marketing tool. Many authors disagree and that's fine. In my family, we often agree to disagree. The famous cookie lady, Mrs. Fields, wasn't selling any cookies until she hit the street and started giving them away.

I realize my sales are above average. To those who might not be selling as well as they would like, remember that nothing has changed when it comes to trends. If you have a well-edited entertaining story, readers will come...eventually. Right now thrillers are HOT. I lucked out, but I'm not talking about dumb luck, I'm talking about hard work + opportunity + good timing = luck. Down the road, another genre will be hot. Until your sales begin to climb, focus on writing the stories that you love to read. Write with passion. Don't rush it. Your time will come.

Recently, Nina Pierce, author of Deceive Her With Desire, wrote a post about her sales because she wanted to let other authors know that "it ain’t all roses and royalty checks for everyone" If you feel as if you're the only one not making enough to quit your day job or buy a new car, you must read Nina's informative and helpful POST.

Self-publishing a book might be easier than ever, BUT you're not going to be successful unless you put in the work. If you have just finished your first book, join RWA or another writers' group. Find a critique partner. Attend writing workshops in your area. Take a class. If you can't afford an editor, but your not sure if your book is ready, have the first ten pages edited so you can get an idea of how much work might need to be done. More than anything you must BELIEVE in yourself. Life is way too short to be fearful. You can do it!

***
David Gaughran is asking self-published authors, whether they have sold 10 books or 10,000 books, to take a quick survey. Steven Lewis runs the Taleist Self-Publishing blog and the Taleist 2012 Self-Publishing Survey is now open. SURVEY IS NOW CLOSED! THANKS TO ALL!

Brenda Hiatt is collecting data on independent publishing. Help her out by sharing your numbers so that we can all benefit. It's all done anonymously. Click HERE for more information.

If you are thinking about self-publishing, but don't know where to start when it comes to marketing, promotion and formatting, don't worry. There are so many helpful authors willing to share what they have learned. My advice to you is to join Indie Romance Ink run by Cate Rowan and Carly Carson. There are over 500 members. Many IRI members are traditionally published and have already self-published a book or two. Some members are undecided. All are welcome to join and learn.

Twice a month I share my number of books sold in hopes that these numbers might help other writers make their own decisions about self-publishing. Every writer has their own personal and unique journey. My hope is that I can inspire others out there who are working hard at their craft to NEVER GIVE UP. Let me know if you have any questions at all.

2011 has been a very exciting year! A Knight in Central Park was mentioned in the Wall Street JournalAbducted stayed on Amazon's Bestseller List for All Kindle Store for three months. In ten months I have sold close to 150,000 ebooks. Thank you, READERS!

Twenty years ago, when I sat down to write my very first book, I ended up with binders filled with notes and character sketches. I had fifty pages of what turned out to be an outline. Five years after beginning my writing journey, I finished Return of the Rose and I joined Romance Writers of America. I also joined the Sacramento Chapter of RWA. I worked with critique partners, I signed with two agents, and I worked with more than a few editors on two of my novels. I garnered six nominations in RWA’s prestigious Golden Heart Competition. I entered writing contests and later became a judge for many of those same contests. I attended conferences all over the U.S. and, most importantly, I wrote every day. Despite all of my hard work, signing with a publisher in New York was not to be. I had written more than ten novels and too many partials to count and I was frustrated. That’s when I decided to write a thriller and kill off some characters and my frustrations at the same time. While researching real-life serial killers I began to have nightmares and had to put the book away. Nine months later, I read what I had written and I felt compelled to finish the story. My husband told me I should self-publish. He also reminded me to write for the love of writing and nothing else. He was right. And that’s exactly what I began to do. I cannot wait to wake up every morning and write. I have a passion for telling stories and I cannot imagine doing anything else. Becoming an indie author has allowed me to share my stories with readers--a dream come true.

Happy Holidays!
