More Talk about Amazon's Bestsellers Rank

The numbers below are based on MY experiences... I'm sure you can find other authors whose numbers are different from these...but the following s/b pretty darn close.

The rankings are interesting to look at if you have a book out there and you are hoping to, for example, get on the Top 100 Romantic Suspense Bestsellers List on Amazon. If I look at the Romantic Suspense List and click on the book title of #99 or #100 and that book has a Bestsellers Rank of 3,400, then I know I need a 3,399 or better to get on that list. ABDUCTED was #93 for about an hour last night.

Amazon Bestsellers Rank is the number you find beneath the Product Description. Every book on Amazon has an Amazon Bestsellers Rank. Click on any title and then scroll down until you see it.

Bestsellers Rank 40,000 to 100,000 - selling close to 1 book a day. (per kindleboards)

Bestsellers Rank 8,500 to 40,000 - selling 1 to 10 books a day.

Bestsellers Rank 3,500 to 8,500 - selling 10 to 20 books a day.

Bestsellers Rank 1,500 to 3,500 - selling 20 to 40 books a day.

Bestsellers Rank 1,100 to 1,500 - selling 40 to 50 books a day.

Bestsellers Rank 900 to 1,100 - selling 50 to 65 books a day.

Bestsellers Rank 650 to 900 - selling 65 to 85 books a day.

Bestsellers Rank 450 to 650 - selling 85 to 100 books a day.

Bestsellers Rank 350 to 450 - selling 100 to 200 books a day.

Bestsellers Rank 100 to 350 - selling 200 to 300 books a day.

Bestsellers Rank 68 to 100 - selling 300 to 700 books a day.

Bestseller Rank of 59 to 68 - selling 700 to 740 books a day.

Bestseller Rank of 3 to 8 - selling about 4,000+ books a day!

That's all I've got for now. If you have more information, please share. And if you see an error, I will fix it. Thanks.

This is a great help. I've printed it out. Thanks, Theresa!

I don't know about this. I've been selling (at a sustained pace) more than 500 books a day for the last week and a half, and I'm at #80 right now--and that's as low as I've been.

I think the Sunshine Deals may have skewed rankings for a while, though, and things may be normalizing.

That makes perfect sense, Courtney. That means if sales rank is, let's say, between 50 and 100, then you're probably selling ABOUT 500 books a day. It fits! I'll put it in there! Thanks!

Courtney, do you think the sales rank of 100 to 350 s/b changed to "selling 200 to 400 books a day"?

And the 50 to 100 sales rank s/b "selling 400 to 700+ books a day"?

Let me know what you think if you read this. :)

I don't really know! The only time I was selling in the 100-350 range has been during the Sunshine Deals, and I know that skewed rank versus sales.

To be honest, the e-book market is growing fast enough and changing swiftly enough that I suspect that this won't even be a useful guide 2 months from now. Possibly not even 2 weeks from now, after all the father's day gifts coming up.

Right now, I'm at #82 right now and I've sold 479 copies today--and there's still 3 hours left on my clock for the day.

Courtney, thanks again! Your numbers still work on the "chart" and I left a pretty wide range for each. I think it's close enough to give people an idea...and that's all I was really going for.

From what I have seen in the last three months, whether an author has a ranking between #900 and #1,100 during the Sunshine Deals or during Mother's Day, that author should be selling somewhere between 50 and 65 books a day...and so on. But I will keep posting #'s based on my findings so people can see what's going on in real time. I should be able to see if the above #'s change to such a degree that renders the above chart completely useless. If so, I will report back to all.

More importantly, congratulations on your terrific sales, Courtney!

Congrats to you, too. Pixies rule! :)

On the low end of things, there was a discussion on Kindleboards suggesting that a sale a day only keeps you bouncing in the 40,000 to 100,000 rank.

Theresa Ragan said...

Cidney, thanks for the info. That's probably a good guess. My guess would have been that a ranking of 40,000 would be about 1 book a day and anything between 40,000 and 100,000 would mean that author was selling between 1 and 5 books a WEEK, which would mean you could have 0 sales for a couple of days and then 1 or 2 and then no sales again and so on.

Keep the numbers coming everyone! It will be interesting to see if these numbers change drastically as the emarket is further saturated with books.

Courtney, I read Unlocked a couple of days ago and LOVED it! Congrats on your sales!

Caroline: Thank you!

Theresa: I've been in the 59-68 slot for 5 days now, and I'm pretty consistently been more than 580--something between 700-740. There's a lot of variability in my rank, which may account for the difference, but I figure this is another datapoint to throw out there.

Wow, Courtney, this is great! All my numbers are fitting in the "chart" since I've put it up...and whenever a writer friend gives me their #'s I check it, too, so this is great. I am going to add your numbers. I'll just keep changing it as needed.

Thank you so much. And CONGRATULATIONS again! Your sales just keep getting better. I hear nothing but great things about your book. Keep up the good work!

Not sure if you are still tracking this, but just wanted to let you know your chart seems right on the money.

After I first released by book it bounced between 12K & 29K- with sales from 4 to 7 a day.

Now its been hovering from 7K-12K with sales from 7-10 a day.

Hi Trish, check out the TAB on the top of my home page. I keep the sales ranking chart right there where it's easy to access and I update it weekly.

Thank you, great post. I am planning to self publish a new book. How would I find out how many books were sold in a given day? What is the best marketing for self-published book? Any insights are greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
